Privacy Policy

Effective date: June 6, 2026

The short version for busy parents: We don't create accounts, we don't collect names, emails, or addresses, and your child's progress lives on your own device — not on our servers. We designed this app so there's almost nothing to collect in the first place.

Who we are

AI Explorers Academy is a 30-mission AI literacy program for children in grades 2–8, guided by ARIA, our AI tutor character. This policy explains what information the app handles and how.

What information the app stores

The app stores the following only on your device (in your browser's local storage):

A nickname your child chooses (we encourage first names or fun made-up names — never full names)
An avatar emoji and grade band (grades 2–5 or 6–8)
Lesson progress, quiz scores, badges, XP, and streaks
Notes and writing your child creates in the lesson workspace

None of this is sent to or stored on our servers. If you clear your browser data or use the app's reset option, it is permanently erased.

The ARIA chat and AI features

When your child asks ARIA a question, the message (and recent chat context) is sent to an AI service to generate an answer:

Anthropic's Claude (via our secure server) — Anthropic does not train its models on this data. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
Pollinations — used as a fallback for chat and for the AI art activity, with safety filters enabled and private mode requested.

We do not store chat messages on any server of ours. ARIA is explicitly instructed to never ask for personal information, and the app teaches children not to share it (it's Lesson 3!). A built-in safety filter also screens messages before they are sent.

What we do NOT do

No accounts, sign-ups, emails, or passwords
No advertising and no third-party ad trackers
No selling, renting, or sharing of any data
No analytics cookies at this time
No collection of names, addresses, phone numbers, photos, or location

Children's privacy (COPPA)

This app is designed for children, so we built it to avoid collecting personal information altogether. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 outside of a school context.

School official exception: When AI Explorers Academy is used through a school or district, the school acts as the authorized agent for parental consent under COPPA's school official exception. By deploying this app to students, the school certifies that use is for educational purposes only and that it has appropriate authority to do so.

If you believe your child has shared personal information through the chat, contact us and we will help — though note that we do not retain chat logs on our servers.

School and district use (FERPA)

For school administrators: A signed Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is available and recommended before district-wide deployment. View and request the DPA →

When AI Explorers Academy is used in a school setting, the following applies:

FERPA compliance: We operate as a "school official" under FERPA with a legitimate educational interest. Student education records remain under the control of the school or district.
No behavioral advertising: We will never use student data to serve targeted advertising to students, build profiles for non-educational purposes, or sell student data to any third party.
Data minimization: We collect only what is necessary to deliver the educational service — a nickname, grade band, and in-app progress. No government IDs, addresses, or biometric data are ever collected.
School-controlled deletion: Upon written request from a school or district administrator, we will delete all data associated with that school's students within 30 days.
Class code data: When students submit progress via a class code, the submission (nickname, grade, mission count, XP, badges) is stored in Netlify Forms and accessible only to the teacher who holds that class code and to RAIWTID AI, LLC staff.

Subprocessors

We use the following third-party services that may process data on our behalf:

Netlify, Inc. — hosting, form submissions (waitlist emails, class check-ins). Data is stored in the United States. Netlify Privacy Policy
Anthropic, PBC — powers ARIA AI chat responses. Chat messages are sent for response generation only; Anthropic does not train on this data. Anthropic Privacy Policy
Pollinations — fallback AI responses and AI art generation. Safety filters are enabled. Pollinations Privacy Policy
Stripe, Inc. (when subscriptions launch) — payment processing only. We never see or store payment card data. Stripe Privacy Policy

We do not authorize subprocessors to use student data for any purpose other than providing the services described above.

Data retention

On-device data (progress, badges, XP): retained until you clear browser data or use the in-app reset. We have no copy of this data.
Netlify Forms submissions (waitlist emails, class check-ins): retained for up to 12 months or until deletion is requested, whichever comes first.
ARIA chat messages: not retained by us. Anthropic's data retention policies apply to their processing.

Your choices and your data

Delete everything: use the reset option in Settings, or clear your browser's site data.
Take it with you: the app can export progress to a file you keep.
Offline mode: the app works offline; AI features simply pause until you reconnect.

Payments

If a paid plan is offered, payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store card numbers. See Stripe's privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date at the top of this page. Material changes will be announced in the app.
